Union leader booked for harassment of Dalit officer
Thiruvananthapuram: The Peroorkada police have filed a case against a union leader on Wednesday for allegedly harassing a Dalit field officer working at the district livestock farm in Kudappanakunnu. The charges include making false complaints against the officer and using political influence to have him transferred.
Field officer, Babu K, 52, was transferred to a regional poultry farm at Kudappanakunnu in July this year, allegedly for implementing certain corrective measures. Babu then approached a court against the transfer, and the court directed the police to investigate after registering a case under sections 3(1)(p) and 3(1)(q) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act-1989.
The case was registered against P S Naidu, the state general secretary of the Govt Farm Workers Union. Babu complained that some staff members consumed alcohol inside the farm, compromising their duties. To monitor this, CCTV cameras were installed, but they were damaged by the staff. He also reported to the govt that certain officials had accepted bribes promising permanent employment status to some daily-wage workers. He added that to enhance the functioning of the farm, he implemented several welfare measures, but they were opposed by a minority group.
“Annoyed by this, the union leader sent a complaint to the govt demanding my transfer, stating that I was trying to sabotage the functioning of the farm. Based on the complaint, I was transferred with immediate effect due to his political influence,” said Babu. He then approached the court. TNN
