War of words over Rahul Gandhi’s five guarantees
Telangana CM Revanth Reddy showered Prime Minister Narendra Modi with praise for deleting a crucial post on X on Telangana’s loan waiver scheme. Reddy submitted that when Modi mentioned that there was no loan waiver scheme in Telangana, he quickly informed the PMO of the present status of the scheme, the exact number of beneficiaries, and the PMO immediately deleted the post on X.
Along with Reddy, Karnataka deputy CM D K Shivakumar and Himachal CM Sukhvinder Sukhu descended in Mumbai to tackle BJP’s criticism of the five guarantees declared by leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi. Their contention was that BJP should not worry about the financial burden owing to implementation of the proposals.
According to them, the BJP had no dispute when the NDA waived loans worth Rs 18 lakh crore of a section of industrialist friends of BJP, now suddenly it has realised that it will not be possible for the cash-starved state to release funds for the schemes. Their homework was perfect, they spelt out on the exact financial burden of each guarantee and the present status in Telangana, Karnataka and Himachal. Reddy claimed that ever since he took over the reins, Rs 18,000 crore has been disbursed to 22 lakh farmers, govt jobs have been given to 50,000 persons, while under the Mahalaxmi scheme, Rs 3,400 crore have been provided to state bus transport corporation.
Maharashtra was the first state to launch a loan waiver scheme following massive suicides in Vidarbha and Marathwada regions. During the tenure of PM Manmohan Singh, Rs 70,000 crore was released to tackle the agrarian crisis. At that time, Sharad Pawar was the agriculture minister. Even during the tenure of Devendra Fadnavis, the highestever loan package was provided to farmers.
Will Rashmi Shukla be back as DGP?Peace is eluding Maharashtra’s first woman DGP Rashmi Shukla after she was sent on leave following the directives of the ECI. Significantly, during his recent visit to Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi too had mentioned the crucial role played by women IPS officers and bureaucrats. He mentioned chief secretary Sujata Saunik and Rashmi Shukla, who was also the first woman police commissioner of Pune. For Shukla, trouble began when she took over the reins of the state intelligence department.
The main charge against her was that she was instrumental in illegal and unauthorised tapping of phones of leading politicians – MPCC president Nana Patole, UBT Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut and NCP’s Eknath Khadse. Both Patole and Khadse had raised the issue of phone tapping in both the houses of the state legislature. Then a high-level probe was conducted into the allegations, an offence was registered against a section of officials.
When Fadnavis was back in the home department, most of the probes as well as cases were closed. Significantly, Patole took it up with chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar on umpteen occasions.
During his visit to Mumbai, he had given a clean chit to Shukla, saying, there was nothing illegal in her appointment as DGP. Then it appeared that the chapter was closed. Then unexpectedly, the ECI asked the CS to forthwith shift Shukla and hand over the charge to the next senior IPS officer. There appears to be a grey area in the entire episode over the present status of Shukla – will she come back as DGP or stand retired.
