UP Assembly by-election: Which way are the Bahujan voters inclined between Mayawati and Chandrashekhar!
If political experts are to be believed, Mayawati has been a big face of Dalit politics for the past several decades, but after losing election after election, her condition is getting very weak. Chandrashekhar is coming forward to fill her empty place.
Lucknow. In the assembly by-elections being held on nine seats of Uttar Pradesh, on one hand Bahujan Samaj Party is contesting to increase its family. On the other hand, Azad Samaj Party (Kanshiram) chief Chandrashekhar is trying to take advantage of its weakness. Chandrashekhar is excited after the victory from Nagina seat. He is also taking new steps to become popular among Dalits.
If political experts are to be believed, Mayawati has been a big face of Dalit politics for the past several decades, but after losing election after election, her condition is getting very weak. Chandrashekhar is coming forward to fill her empty place. Chandrashekhar is not only seen establishing himself in politics, but he is also seen raising his voice strongly in favor of Dalits.
If we look at the figures of political parties, BSP has not been able to open its account even in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections after 2014. The support base has also slipped by more than 10 percent. In this Lok Sabha election, not even a single seat could be won. In 2019, the vote share of BSP was about 19.43 percent, but now it has remained only 9.35 percent.
BSP was also seen going to third and fourth place in Haryana Assembly. Here the party had to face a big defeat. In Haryana, BSP has won one seat in every assembly election from 2000 to 2014. In 2019 also it did not get any seat. BSP has got 1.82 percent votes in Haryana assembly elections this time.
Senior political analyst Virendra Singh Rawat says that after the victory of Chandrashekhar’s party in Nagina elections, a new consciousness is being seen among the Dalits. Slowly they have started taking advantage of BSP’s weakness. They have benefited the most from activism. Chandrashekhar is the one who is raising the issues of Dalits after Mayawati did not come out in the field. Due to this, his influence is increasing among Dalit youth. He is becoming popular among them.
Dalits are getting disillusioned with his party due to the continuous defeat of BSP. Chandrashekhar wants to take advantage of this. This is why he first fought with the Haryana Assembly Alliance. Although he did not get success, but he made his presence felt in the state. Now he is contesting by-elections on eight out of nine assembly seats in UP. He wants to become the prominent face of Bahujan Samaj. Both the parties are trying to bring Dalits to their side. BSP wants to get its lost votes in the Lok Sabha through the by-election. Chandrashekhar is trying to become the new savior of Dalit politics.
BSP state president Vishwanath Pal says that we have made large scale preparations for the by-election. Even if Azad Samaj Party contests the election, it does not matter. These people have contested elections in Haryana as well. NOTA has got more votes than them. They are supporting the SP which has abolished the districts named after Kanshi Ram and Sant Ravidas. This is being done by them in the Kanpur seat. Efforts can be made to mislead the Dalit community. But Mayawati is the true well-wisher of this class.
State President of Azad Samaj Party Sunil Chittor says that our party is contesting elections on eight seats. Our nomination was rejected in Kanpur seat. We are not a hindrance in anyone’s path. In democracy, everyone has the right to contest elections and get their rights. No one is trying to match Behenji. She has only become the Chief Minister. We are moving ahead with our policies and ideas. Whichever party we want to support, they can do so. We are contesting elections on 40 seats in Maharashtra. We are contesting elections on 14 seats in Jharkhand. Along with this, we are also contesting by-elections in Rajasthan and UP. We are expanding our party and giving competition to parties that have been in power for decades.
