Congress had announced Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature in June that she would contest from the Wayanad seat vacated by Rahul Gandhi’s resignation. Since then, Kerala Congress had started making strategies for Priyanka Gandhi’s record-breaking victory. After Priyanka’s arrival in Kerala after Rahul, tremendous enthusiasm is being seen among the state Congress workers. Priyanka Gandhi was earlier the Congress in-charge of Uttar Pradesh. In this Lok Sabha election, she played a major role in the victory of Congress in Rae Bareli and Amethi.

Senior Congress leader A.K. Antony says that Priyanka Gandhi will win the by-election to the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat by the biggest margin ever. Former Kerala Chief Minister Antony said that there is a wave (in favour of Priyanka) in Wayanad. We will fight with full strength. She will win by the biggest margin ever, much beyond everyone’s expectations. Other candidates will lose very badly.

In this way, senior Congress leader and Kasaragod MP Rajmohan Unnithan said that we will ensure that Priyanka wins by a margin of 5 lakhs. If this happens, it will be the biggest margin in the history of Wayanad, even bigger than Rahul Gandhi’s 2019 victory margin of 4.60 lakh.

Rajamohan Unnithan further said that a comprehensive election strategy meeting will be held to outline the campaign roadmap for Priyanka Gandhi. Priyanka’s hoardings have been put up in Kerala. In the 2019 general elections, Rahul Gandhi won the Wayanad seat with a handsome lead of 4.6 lakh votes. However, his margin reduced to 3.64 lakh votes in the 2024 elections. The Congress is now keen to regain its momentum through Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature.

Priyanka to face Satyan Mokeri

The LDF has fielded senior CPI leader Satyan Mokeri as its candidate for the by-election to the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. Mokeri, a former MLA from Nadapuram constituency in Kozhikode district, is known for his work related to resolving issues related to the agriculture sector. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Wayanad but was unsuccessful.

The seat fell vacant after Rahul’s resignation

The by-election to the Wayanad seat is being held due to Rahul Gandhi leaving the seat. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had won both Wayanad and Rae Bareli parliamentary seats. According to the rules, it was not possible for him to remain an MP on both the seats. In such a situation, he had to resign from one seat. He chose Wayanad seat to resign. In this way Rahul Gandhi decided to remain MP from Rae Bareli.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections also, Rahul Gandhi had won from Wayanad seat. At the same time, he had to face a crushing defeat at the hands of BJP candidate Smriti Irani in Amethi.
