I-card for every transgender’s welfare
Daltonganj: The transgender welfare committee organised its first-ever meeting at the collectorate in Daltonganj on Tuesday to address the basic needs of the transgender community, starting with providing them with certificates of identity. The ID cards will be distributed among around 40 transgender individuals in the district.
The meeting, chaired by deputy commissioner (DC) Shashi Ranjan, was attended by several key officials, including two transgender representatives, Ayesha Singh and Sapna.
The DC directed civil surgeon, Dr Anil Kumar, to ensure that the process is carried out promptly and without any inconvenience to the transgender individuals. Dr Kumar clarified that according to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules 2020, a transgender individual can make a self-declaration of their identity through an affidavit on a 10-rupee non-gazetted stamp paper, signed by a notary, without undergoing any medical examination or test.
Ranjan also highlighted the challenges faced by the transgender community in obtaining proof of address due to their nomadic lifestyle. To address this issue, he instructed the DDC, Shabbir Ahmad, to identify suitable govt land that can be allocated as residential plots for the community.
The DC emphasized the importance of providing land rights to the transgender community, as it is a prerequisite for obtaining essential documents such as Aadhar cards, ration cards, and voter cards. He further discussed the plan to establish a colony-type shelter for the transgender community, similar to a community hall, known as “Garima Grih.”
Meanwhile, Ayesha Singh, the head of the local transgender clan, shared her experience of being harassed by a traffic constable while on her way to attend the meeting. The DC directed SDPO Sadar, Mani Bhushan Prasad, to identify the offending traffic cop.
