This year, Pune will witness a groundbreaking addition to its Ganesh festival celebrations. The Market Yard area will host Maharashtra’s first transgender dhol-tasha troupe, named “Shikhandi.” This historic troupe represents a significant milestone in the festival’s history and is set to bring a unique flair to the festivities.
Pune is home to over 200 dhol-tasha troupes, but “Shikhandi” is the first of its kind formed by a group of transgender individuals. The troupe has already begun rigorous practice sessions in preparation for their debut. This Ganesh festival will see “Shikhandi” performing during the processions, adding a new and inclusive dimension to the city’s vibrant celebrations.
