SP-BSP face to face in the battle for Dalit votes
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is claiming that the conspiracy of appointments by rejecting reservation through the back door has finally bowed down to the unity of PDA. This means that the decision was taken back by the Centre but Akhilesh and Mayawati are taking the credit for it. By the way, this is what is called politics.
As soon as the Modi government withdrew its decision of direct recruitment (lateral entry) in jobs at higher posts, the opposition made it a weapon to surround Modi. The entire opposition is patting its own back. UP leaders Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav are at the forefront among those patting their backs. BSP supremo Mayawati and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav feel that this will change the axis of UP politics. BSP chief Mayawati had reacted that after her strong protest, the government has withdrawn the decision of direct recruitment. At the same time, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is claiming that the conspiracy of appointments by rejecting reservation through the back door has finally bowed down to the unity of PDA. This means that the Centre has taken back the decision but Akhilesh and Mayawati are taking credit for it. This is what is called politics.
This is not the first time that the opposing BSP and SP leaders are speaking in the same tone. Similar tone was also seen on the issue of classification in reservation. When BSP supported the bandh, Akhilesh also immediately wrote a post in its support and put forth his side. The matter is not limited to this. Mayawati and Akhilesh are continuously looking aggressive on every issue related to reservation. What is the reason that both are speaking in the same tone on the issue of reservation? Or is there a race between the two as to who is more friendly to the Dalits and the backward classes? What politics are Mayawati and Akhilesh pursuing through this issue?
To understand the answer to all these questions, it is important to look at the conditions and results before the last Lok Sabha elections. Although the constitution and reservation have been the core issues of BSP, but before the last Lok Sabha elections, SP had joined hands with Congress and raised the slogan of PDA (Backward-Dalit-Minority) and the issue of protecting the constitution by joining India Alliance. When India Alliance benefited from this, BSP supremo started seeing her political future in darkness. Earlier, even Mayawati did not expect that this move of SP would be so effective. When the results came, SP alone won 37 seats in UP. Along with this, Congress also won six seats and BSP was wiped out. The vote percentage also slipped to only about nine and a half percent. This made it clear that SP has made a big dent in BSP’s Dalit vote bank. Since then, Mayawati’s only effort is to somehow bring back her Dalit vote bank. For this, Mayawati is continuously raising issues related to Dalit interests. Meanwhile, when the Supreme Court gave its opinion on the classification in SC-ST reservation, Mayawati’s hopes got wings. Mayawati immediately grabbed the issue. Her reaction came first. Terming it completely wrong, she started cornering BJP as well as other parties including SP-Congress. She stuck to the demand of bringing constitutional amendment in the Parliament. She held two press conferences on this issue and made several statements through social media.
Initially, Congress gave a measured response to this, but seeing Mayawati’s aggressive stance, SP also opened a front openly. Meanwhile, the issue of 69,000 teacher recruitment also came up, on which both SP and BSP appeared aggressive. Akhilesh Yadav felt that if he remained silent now, the Dalit class which had joined him in the last Lok Sabha elections, might go back to BSP. He also announced a movement on October 2 in the matter of direct recruitment. Mayawati is also maintaining an aggressive stance on this issue through her statements.
The bottom line is that SP and BSP leaders are constantly trying to give the message that they are the real well-wishers of Dalits. BSP has constituted committees afresh after the Lok Sabha elections. It was also clearly visible that Dalits are being given more importance. At the same time, Akhilesh Yadav is also promoting Faizabad MP Awadhesh Prasad after the Lok Sabha elections. He is seen with Awadhesh Prasad from Parliament to public forums. In Parliament too, Awadhesh Prasad was made a member of the Presiding Board in the Lok Sabha. Like Mayawati, he often takes the name of Ambedkar and Kanshiram from the forums. Actually, assembly by-elections are to be held in UP right now.
