Crimes against Tribals and Dalits increased under BJP government in Rajasthan: Ashok Gehlot
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday accused the BJP government in the state of failing to protect Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) as crimes against these communities have surged since the party came to power. Gehlot urged Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma to take personal responsibility for ensuring the safety of Dalits and tribals in the state.
In a post on X, Gehlot shared a news report about a crime in Jodhpur’s Shergarh, stating, “During our government, prompt action was taken against crimes targeting SCs and STs, and the police stood firmly with victims. Since the change in government, crimes against SCs and STs have increased rapidly.”
Gehlot highlighted alarming statistics, noting that the crime rate against Dalits and tribals escalated from 32.7% in January 2024 to 33.7% in February, 34.1% in March, 19.5% in April, 62.5% in May, and 53.37% in June.
The Congress leader referenced a specific incident in Shergarh where a 40-year-old man was allegedly beaten by a group trying to force him to withdraw a police case filed under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Gehlot criticized the current government’s and police’s apparent negligence towards such atrocities.
“These incidents are a stain on the Rajasthan government. The government cannot escape responsibility. The Chief Minister himself should take cognizance and ensure the safety of Dalits and tribals,” Gehlot added.
