A shocking incident has come to light from Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. When a Dalit man in a remote village of the district could not come to play drums in the temple due to illness, the Dalit families were allegedly boycotted. The local Panchayat of Subhai village located in the Niti Valley near the India-China border announced this boycott on Sunday.
The man did not go due to illness
There are about six families of Scheduled Caste in the village, whose many generations have been playing drums in the social, cultural and religious festivals held in the village, but a person named Pushkar Lal could not come to play drums in a religious event due to illness, after which the local Panchayat ordered the social boycott of the entire community. A panchayat member was seen in a video allegedly announcing the boycott and threatening villagers with similar consequences if they did not comply with the order.
Aggrieved family lodged complaint
As per the panchayat order, SC families were banned from using forest and water resources in the village, buying essential commodities from shops, commuting in vehicles and visiting temples. The aggrieved families lodged a complaint at the Joshimath police station, accusing two men, Ramkrishna Khandwal and Yashveer Singh, of issuing the order. (Language)
