Fact Check: Dalit’s death due to beating in Rajasthan given communal angle on social media
A disturbing video is going viral on social media in which some people are seen beating a person with sticks. The video is being accompanied by the claim that the people doing the beating are Muslims, who beat a Dalit man to death.
At the beginning of the video, a man is seen repeatedly hitting a man with a stick while he is lying face down on the ground. Two other men are seen holding the hands and legs of this man so that he cannot save himself. After this, a second clip comes in which two people are holding the same man’s legs up after tying them with sticks and a third man is brutally hitting the soles of the man with a stick. After this, some people are seen in police custody in the video and bulldozers are seen running on some houses.
The caption with the video reads, “Chuslims openly beat and massacred a Dalit youth”. This video is being shared on Facebook and X with the same caption. The archived version of the viral post can be seen here. Aaj Tak Fact Check found that this incident happened recently in Rajasthan in which some people beat up a Dalit youth so much that he died. None of the accused in this case is Muslim. Rather, the main accused is also a Dalit.
How to know the truth?
On searching the video, we found many news reports published on this matter. In the report of “Amar Ujala” dated 22 May 2024, it is told that this incident took place on 14 May in Baloda village of Surajgarh police station area of ????Jhunjhunu. According to the news, the liquor mafia in the village kidnapped a youth named Rameshwar Valmiki and beat him brutally. Due to this he died. A few days later, videos of this assault surfaced. Rameshwar was kidnapped by the liquor mafia and taken to a mansion where he was brutally beaten up. In this case, history-sheeter Dipendra alias Chintu Rajput, Praveen alias PK Meghwal, Praveen alias Baba Meghwal, Subhash alias Chintu Meghwal and Satish alias Sukha Meghwal were arrested. The administration also ran a bulldozer on the accused’s hideouts.
“News 18” reports that the liquor mafia beat up Rameshwar for not buying expensive liquor from their shop. After the youth became unconscious, the accused took him to the hospital where he was declared dead. The liquor mafia threw the deceased in front of his house and left. The liquor mafia itself made a video of this incident of assault.
We also spoke to Jhunjhunu Superintendent of Police Rajarshi Raj Verma on this matter. He told us that there is no communal angle in the case. According to Verma, nine accused have been arrested in this case and the main accused among them are Dalits. No accused is Muslim. Jhunjhunu Police has also given the names of the accused while commenting on the viral tweet.
