According to Govandi police, they received a complaint from another student on January 23, following which an FIR was registered. The complainant alleged that the accused hurt the sentiments of Hindus by uploading the status with a picture of Lord Ram.
Later, he was arrested under Indian Penal Code Sections 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race etc.) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to arouse the religious sentiments of any group by insulting its religion or beliefs religious). Police officials said he was detained in police custody for more than two days and then released on bail.
The arrested student belongs to a campus group that sent a secret letter to the institute’s director requesting the removal of saffron flags and life-sized posters of Lord Ram from the campus. The group saw it as all part of a political agenda. After the student, who hails from Latur, was arrested, the group submitted a letter of apology for “hurting the sentiments” of those celebrating the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
