A Dalit woman in Bihar was allegedly thrashed by a police officer and the incident has prompted a row and has drawn widespread condemnation after its purported video went viral on social media.
The incident took place in the Sursand area in Sitamarhi district on Saturday but the video went viral on social media on Monday.
In the video, Inspector Raj Kishore Singh of Sursand police station is seen striking a middle-aged woman with a stick in public while some others looked on. According to reports, the police officer charged the woman allegedly after she and another woman were engaged in a public fight.
Meanwhile, people who witnessed the brawl, claimed the woman sustained injuries in the police action and was subsequently admitted to a private nursing home for treatment, however, police claimed she was not injured.
Police claimed Singh was trying to separate two women brawling on the road, amid demands by locals for action against the inspector. Sitamarhi Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Tiwari said that a probe has been ordered into the viral video. Prime facie it seems that the police officer used force to separate the two women engaged in a fight on the street, he added.
A statement issued by the district police stated on Monday: “A probe has been ordered into the incident. Action will be initiated against the police officer posted at Sursand police station only after receiving the report. A sub-divisional police officer has been designated to probe the incident and also examine the authenticity of the video.”
Meanwhile, a Sub-divisional police officer Vinod Kumar later said that the incident is related to the kidnapping of a girl. “The girl was rescued by the police. But the two sides reached the police station and later indulged in a fight outside,” he revealed. Reportedly, the fight prompted a traffic jam on the road in front of the police station and the police officer had to intervene to restore traffic on the busy road, Kumar asserted.
