Transgender community criticises Dilip Ghosh’s ‘eunuch’ barb at TMC
KOLKATA: BJP’s former West Bengal unit vice president Dilip Ghosh’s “trample azaadi under boots” comment drew criticism across the political spectrum in West Bengal on Monday.
Ghosh’s remark at the Trinamool Congress terming the party as “eunuch” has also drawn protests from the transgender community.
“We expect politicians to educate people. When the Supreme Court has accepted the transgender community, such statements try to alienate us from the masses. Why should anyone equate non-performance or inaction with the transgenders? We expect more humane leaders in the society,” said Ranjita Sinha, president of the Association of Transgenders in Bengal.
A few days back, the Madras high court had directed the president of the Nainarkuppam panchayat to explain the legal basis of his representation to the Cuddalore district collector seeking to cancel the patta granted by the government to the transgender in the locality.
The court had noted that a perusal of the representation submitted by the petitioner revealed that he was “developing hatred” towards the transgender community and that is “unconstitutional”.
“We had protested when Kunal Ghosh made a similar remark against Dilip Ghosh’s colleague Suvendu Adhikari. We had staged a dharna in protest of that. We will protest as long as people realise that a transgender cannot be equated with someone who is ineffective,” Sinha said.
