New York road intersection co-named in honour of BR Ambedkar
BR Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution and champion of Dalit rights, has had an intersection in New York named after him – ‘Dr. BR Ambedkar Way’.

An intersection of roads in New York has been named after BR Ambedkar–the architect of the Indian Constitution.
The intersection of 61st Street and Broadway will be called “Dr. BR Ambedkar Way”.

The co-naming ceremony was hosted by Councilwoman Julie Won, who represents the 26th Council District, and the Shri Guru Ravidass Temple of New York, which is located at the intersection of 61st Street and Broadway.
During the ceremony, Congresswoman Grace Meng, state Senator Michael Gianaris and Assemblyman Steven Raga were also present
India in New York shared the images on Twitter and wrote, “Grateful for the honour bestowed on the architect of Indian Constitution”.
BR Ambedkar was fondly called Babasaheb. He was the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee and a champion of the Dalit and minority rights movement in India.
Born into a poor Mahar caste in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, Ambedkar moved to the United States in 2013 to study at Columbia University in New York City. He earned doctorates in economics from Columbia University and the London School of Economics.
Throughout his life, Ambedkar worked for the upliftment of the Dalit (untouchable) community. He published the book Annihilation of Caste in 1936 which spoke against the caste system.
In 1956, Ambedkar converted to Buddhism along with 500,000 Dalit followers. The father of the Indian Constitution converted to Buddhism along with 500,000 Dalit followers in 1990.
Last week Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited America on a four-day trip. Members of the Indian diaspora brandished banners with PM Modi’s face on them. The members of the Indian community were seen standing outside the Capitol Hill building displaying support and enthusiasm.
Prime Minister Modi was hosted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden for an intimate dinner at the White House.
He was also hosted at a State dinner at the White House in which more than 400 guests were present.
