Attack on dalits: VCK to protest on June 12
Madurai: Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan has announced that the party will organize a protest on June 12 to condemn the recent attack on dalits in Thirumohur. He visited the victims of the caste clash at Government Rajaji Hospital and consoled their family members.
The incident took place during the annual Vaikasi festival at Sri Kalamegha Perumal Temple in Thirumohur, near Y Othakadai, on Friday night. A clash broke out between a group of youths from the thevar community and youths from a Scheduled Caste community. The police intervened and dispersed the groups.
However, the thevar youths returned to the Scheduled Caste colony and launched a violent attack. Over 30 motorcycles and a car were damaged, and four Scheduled Caste youths sustained injuries. Due to the prevailing tension, police picketing was deployed in the area on Saturday.
Addressing reporters after meeting the youngsters on Sunday, Thirumavalavan said that caste-based atrocities are happening more in Madurai and its surrounding regions. Despite numerous complaints, no significant action has been taken against the perpetrators. Thirumavalavan emphasized that the VCK will stage a protest on June 12 to condemn the attack and urge the police and government to take strong measures against caste violence in the district.
Regarding the recent Google glitch that displayed Madurai Airport as ‘Mutharaiyar International Airport,’ Thirumavalavan stated youngsters have been misguided by community leaders. He emphasized that such incidents are the actions of individuals and should be addressed by the government.
Madurai MP Su Venkatesan also visited the injured youngsters at GRH and expressed his disappointment over the attack on dalits. He demanded that the government compensate the victims in accordance with the SC/ST Act. Venkatesan alleged negligence on the part of the police in handling the brawl and that the people involved in the violence should be identified and punished, he said.
