98 convicts were sentenced to life imprisonment in the violence against Dalits case, 97 got bail
Koppal Dalit Violence: Karnataka High Court granted bail to 97 accused sentenced to life imprisonment in the violence against Dalits case.
Dharwad: The Dharwad bench of the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday granted bail to 97 accused sentenced to life imprisonment in the violence against Dalits case in Markumbi village of Gangavathi taluk in Koppal district.
A bench of Justices Srinivas Harish Kumar and TG Sivasankara Gowda accepted 10 criminal appeals filed separately by other accused including the fourth accused Pampavati in the case and 97 accused were granted bail.
In the violence against Dalits case, all except the first accused Manjunath have got bail. The court has directed all the accused to deposit a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh. The convicts will also have to pay the fine imposed by the trial court.
According to the order, the accused who got bail cannot go out of Koppal district without prior permission of the court and they will have to attend the hearing conducted by the officials and cooperate in the investigation. Also, they will not try to destroy the evidence.
Life sentence was given by Koppal District Court
In the year 2014, 98 people were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Koppal District Court in the violence against Dalits case. Three others, who were from the ST community, were sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000. The convicts who were sentenced to life imprisonment were also fined from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000. All are lodged in Ballari Central Jail.
Judge Chandrashekhar C had convicted 101 people in the case. The accused approached the High Court questioning this decision.
