3 transgenders become SIs by breaking social barriers
Patna: She would always hide her identity in public and cover her face with a scarf. But now, 27-year-old Manvi Madhu Kashyap, a transgender who has become a sub-inspector with the state police, wants to visit her village in police uniform to convey a powerful message that any big task can be achieved through hard work and dedication.
Madhu is one of the three transgender people — the other two being Ronit Jha and Bunty Kumar — who cleared the Bihar Police Subordinate Selection Commission (BPSSC) exams to qualify for the sub-inspector position in the state. “Our dream became a reality with the state govt’s decision to make a provision that for every 500 appointments in the Bihar police, a transgender person will be recruited,” she said.
Madhu, who hails from Panjwara village in Banka district, added, “I used to wear a scarf to hide my identity out of fear of society. I left my village after completing graduation to prepare for competitive exams. My mother would secretly visit me in Patna, but now I want to go to my village dressed in police uniform and proudly tell the villagers that I have no shame in being transgender.”
Recounting her struggles, Madhu said, “I faced many challenges in life as a transgender person. People would tease me and I encountered serious difficulties. I visited 4-5 coaching centres to get admission, but I was turned away from all of them with comments like, ‘your presence will disturb the atmosphere here’. It was discouraging.”
