23-year-old Dalit girl found dead for not supporting SP candidate
Lucknow: A 23-year-old Dalit woman, who was missing since Tuesday, was found dead on Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh’s Karhal assembly seat. Voting for the by-election is to be held here on Wednesday. The woman’s family has alleged that she was murdered for refusing to vote for the Samajwadi Party. The by-elections held on 15 assembly seats spread across Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Kerala saw 50 to 70 per cent polling. During this period, sporadic incidents of violence and complaints of irregularities and misuse of government machinery also surfaced.
The father of the victim woman in Karhal in Mainpuri district has alleged in the FIR that local SP leader Prashant Yadav kidnapped his daughter and killed her by poisoning her with the help of Mohan Katheria. Mainpuri SP Vinod Kumar said, “Both the accused Mohan Katheria and Prashant Yadav have been arrested and further investigation into the incident is on.” After this incident, a tussle started between the BJP and the SP. By-elections were held on nine seats in Uttar Pradesh. According to the Election Commission update at 5 pm, Ghaziabad recorded 33.30% polling, Katehari 56.69%, Khair 46.43%, Kundarki 57.32%, Karhal 53.92%, Majhawan 50.41%, Meerapur 57.02%, Phulpur 43.43% and Sisamau 49.03% polling.
Acting on complaints by SP president Akhilesh Yadav against police officials checking voter and Aadhaar ID cards, the Election Commission ordered the suspension of five policemen who violated guidelines. “Taking cognizance of the complaints, five policemen deployed on election duty have been suspended – two each in Kanpur and Muzaffarnagar and one in Moradabad,” UP Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa said. An incident of stone pelting was reported in Kakrauli village during polling in Meerapur seat. SSP Abhishek Singh said that police immediately reached the spot and dispersed the crowd using mild force.
57.64% polling was recorded in the Kedarnath assembly by-election in Uttarakhand. 63% polling was recorded in the by-elections held on four assembly seats in Punjab. 81% polling was recorded in Gidderbaha seat, 63% in Dera Baba Nanak, 54% in Barnala and 53% in Chabbewal. Clashes broke out between AAP and Congress supporters in Dera Pathana village of Dera Baba Nanak seat. Heavy police force was deployed on the spot to control the situation.
