2 transgender candidates to contest from Hatia, Giridih
Ranchi: Two transgender candidates, Nagma Rani and Ashwini Ambedkar, are poised to make history in Jharkhand by running in the upcoming assembly elections. They are advocating for LGBTQ rights while also addressing broader social issues, including healthcare, education, and employment opportunities for marginalized communities.
Rani, supported by Jaiprakash Janta Dal, is contesting from Hatia assembly seat in Ranchi in the first phase of elections. “Transgender people have long been sidelined in political discussions. It’s time we have a representation to voice our concerns and contribute to the society,” said Rani who submitted her nomination on October 23. Rani is competing against 26 other candidates.
Asha Singh, the Jaiprakash Janta Dal VP, commends Rani’s dedication to social work. “She uses her earnings to help people in her community. She supports education and assists with marriage processes, showing her commitment to improving others’ lives,” Singh explains.
Ashwini Ambedkar is contesting from the Giridih assembly constituency under Aapki Vikash Party banner in the second phase. Having filed her nomination on October 29, she faces 13 other candidates. Ashwini’s political aspirations are driven by her desire to address educational and employment challenges faced by youth and low-income families in the constituency.
“I entered politics to address the struggles young people face in education and employment, along with the difficulties experienced by low-income families in our area,” says Ambedkar.
