15 more arrested in the case of sexual abuse of Dalit teenager by more than 60 people in Pathanamthitta, Kerala
PATHANAMTHITTA Pathanamthitta: Police teams investigating the revelations of an 18-year-old girl said that more than 60 people have sexually abused her in the last five years. So far, the police have arrested 20 people, including a juvenile. A total of six cases have been registered in connection with the incident, two in Elavumthitta and four in Pathanamthitta police stations. Cases have also been registered under the POCSO Act.
More cases are likely to be registered in the future. Based on the statements of the victim, who has allegedly been repeatedly sexually abused since the age of 13, the Elavumthitta police arrested five people on Friday. On Saturday, the Pathanamthitta police arrested 15 more people, including a 17-year-old boy. A special investigation team headed by Pathanamthitta DSP S Nandakumar has been formed and the police are questioning the accused, including her father’s friends, in detail. The girl, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste community, told the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) members about the incident, who later informed the police.
According to the police, when the girl was 13, Subin, the son of her father’s friend, seduced her by showing pornographic scenes on his mobile phone. He also took nude photographs of the girl on his phone. When the girl turned 16, Subin took her to a deserted rubber plantation in his area and sexually abused her. He also recorded a video of the act on his phone. The sexual abuse was carried out regularly thereafter, police said. Investigation revealed that the scenes were shared among Subin’s friends, who also sexually abused her.
Subin was arrested on Friday. On Saturday, new cases were registered in the order of the places where the girl was raped. Police said she was sexually abused at various places, including her school. According to the girl’s statement, the perpetrators used to communicate with her through her father’s mobile phone without her knowledge. Police have identified about 40 people after verifying information from phone records and a note found with her. The girl, whose academic performance suffered due to the repeated abuse, disclosed the matter to the women’s empowerment collective during a counselling session. The collective then informed the CWC about the matter.On the direction of the CWC, Pathanamthitta woman police sub-inspector Shamimol recorded the girl’s detailed statement in the presence of her mother. The victim is currently attending counselling sessions by the CWC and staying at a shelter home. District police chief V G Vinod Kumar said legal action would continue based on the statements.Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women has directed the state police to file a report within three days regarding the incident.
