Rajinikanth fulfils 15-year promise, gives farmers 1 crore

CHENNAI: Rajinikanth agreed to keep his promise made 15 years ago to donate 1 crore toward the national river inter-linking project, after a delegation of 16 famers met him on Sunday at his Poes Garden residence. The actor had made the promise in 2002 when he undertook a fast demanding that the Karnataka government release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as ordered by the Supreme Court.
When Rajinikanth took up the Cauvery issue 15 years ago, speculation was rife that he may enter politics. The actor had called for the linking of the Himalayan rivers in the north and the Peninsular rivers in the south, pledging a sum of 1 crore for the cause.

Led by the National South Indian River Interlinking Agriculturist Association founder and state president P Ayyakannu, farmers from 16 districts knocked the actor’s door on Sunday to remind him of his promise. In a 45-minute interaction with the farmers, the actor assured that he will hand over a sum of 1 crore to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ayyakannu, 68, who is a lawyer and a farmer based in Trichy, said, “Rajinikanth wanted to hand over 1 crore to us but we asked him that he personally hand it over to the Prime Minister. He gladly agreed.” The farmers who met Rajinikanth had taken part in the 40-day drought relief package protests in Delhi two months ago.
Rajinikanth has made the donation for linking of the peninsular rivers such as Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Palar and Cauvery. Ayyakannu said, “Rajinikanth appreciated our protests in Delhi. He asked us to take the protests forward in the Gandhian path and urged us not to inconvenience the public.” Ayyakannu said that the protests will resume on July 10 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. “Farmer representatives from 27 states urged us to meet Rajinikanth to remind him of his promise.”
Ayyakannu also said farmers across the country wanted M S Swaminathan to win the presidential election scheduled next month.
